iPad screen-size 1024 x 768 questions!

Hi gang,
when I look at apps on my iPad, I realize that there is a small (20 pixels?) strip at the top which is reserved for displaying the network connection, the time and battery level.
Do I need to adjust my layout to accommodate that or is Apple just overlaying their stuff above my screen?

I have left that area empty so that nothing collides ... but I am not sure if I did the right thing?

    Your game will take up the entire screen and the bar will go away, so you can design for 1024x768.

    No, do not leave a space empty for that. Cover up the whole 1024x768 screen. GS apps do not show the status bar at the top
