Think outside the box contest game - 'Mind The Gap' By cbt
This is a thread about my game for the 'Think outside the box contest'.
(contest link here: http://gamesalad.com/forums/topic.php?id=17247)
I always wanted to do a "instant-play" game. A game with no story, no in-depth game design (like item upgrades, money), no waiting times.
"Touch-for-action"
And hardness levels.. There has to be some hardness levels.. I always wanted to do that..
I can't remember the app name, or who made it but, there was a free "tapping" game made with GameSalad. The game was about "tap as much as you can in 10 seconds". And I played that game for a loooong time. Not by myself but, I showed it to most of my friends and we competed each time. And same thing happened with the "Canabalt" too. The game will be something like that. (Or at least, I'm gonna try.)
And my game idea is from another game. I used to spend all my spare time playing that game. And I want to remake that game in GameSalad, not just for this challenge, but, to compete against myself too. I think I'm gonna have to push my limits :P
The game is simple. The screen closes in short intervals and there is just few random gaps. Your "character" must be in one of these gaps to pass the level.
I already started experimenting about 40minutes ago and still nowhere near what I want. This so-called "simple" game I found seems to be not so simple...

Not exactly what you imagined, right?
Well.. We are just starting..
(DAMN!)
In th video would the idea be you have to tap the black area before it disappears?
Look forward to seeing this one develop. I love those quick how many or how far games, canabalt is still great and a cool looking game too. I remember one where you have to unroll a loo roll as much as you can in 10 seconds, we all played it at work, finding the nest technique like running with two fingers on the screen.
Just played my first go made it just past Taj Mahal without dieing...
Definitely stick with it CBT be interesting to see if its possible with GameSalad. You could make it slightly harder than Mr.Runner...
I'm gonna stick with different style.. At least it won't be the same..
**Got some things under control. (Its logic was harder than I tought!!)
John
(I need to spend more time on my main projects.. This takes too much time.. lol..)
And overall, it still looks ugly, I know..
(And should I not update this thread this often?)
And a new GS error I've just seen for the first time:

I think now it lets you know if you have any missing values etc.
Weird bug with your first actor, its like its on a timer, or just a bit on the slow side...
Good luck...and I like the idea of it always being on one screen...definitely feel more panicked as your constantly looking to see where the next gap is available...
-I'm planning to change the name. (I won't say the new name yet)
-All the gameplay without any hardness levels is now ready.
-There will be 3 hardness levels. Easy - Hard - Intense.
-I've made a good "statistics" screen. I always enjoyed stats when I'm playing games.
-I couldn't make the highscore thing. For some reason it doesn't change when the score is passed. And I'm sure the rules and logic is true. I'm trying to find out what is wrong. (This is the biggest bug for now.)
And I decided to release this when the contest ends. But if it is okay, I won't send this to apple when this is over. I'm planning to contact with Ian from debugdesign for its graphics. And, I have to do this after the challenge ends, because, you know, its not fair before
Glad its all working for you. And as I suspect a few might fall in love with their little games and not want to publish them until they are perfect...
I think the new name will be "Release Me!"
And this is really close to completion!
I think I really pushed the GS engine to the limits..
Are you still gonna hold off sending it to apple whilst you wait for graphics to be made up etc?
Not sure if I'll get my game finished in time, fingers crossed it all comes together
I know I said "I may not find a chance to post again in near future" but I wasn't expecting to be gone for this long!
I screwed up at the last day of the contest!

I haven't sent the game to Apple yet. (Actually, I'm sending now.)
Sorry to all.. Some things happened and I couldn't find a chance to upload my game or post in the forums.
I haven't been working on the game all this time. Everything is still the same. I just added the character, added music.
If I'm still in, I can send an Ad Hoc build to anyone who wants to check out.
I haven't even tested on any device but iPhone4. I hope it is playeble on other devices too...
Sorry again for sudden disappear..

And "Release Me" was a no go. So I'm sticking with the old title. (Damn you infected mushroom!)
