So...

I was sat around, not doing too much tonight.

So I decided to play around and make this :

Now.....I could have made it nice and easy, with a background image, and some actors for the player, bullet and enemies.

But OH NO.

I decided to make it for real, with led actors that turn on and off as needed :)

enjoy.

Did you create the art for the LED's yourself?

    no.

I nicked an off image and an on image from this

    http://images.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/developer/images/ledpanel_20070608170833.jpg

i recolourd the on image in green for the enemy led trigger.

Wow that is very cool. I love it.

So is that 224 individual actors in the scene and if so how is performance.

    Great Work.

yeah. it's 224 instances of the led actor, that has a rule to be on or off when a trigger actor collides with it.

I then build the moving stuff out of invisible trigger actors etc.

    Performance is pretty bad.

45fps on my 3GS. Although, because of the way the movement works in "steps" you don't notice. It still feels as responsive as it does on the mac.

If it was made in a cheating way :

The off LEDs are a single background image, and the moving actors are made from on LED graphics, the obviously, performance should be pretty great.......but thats no fun :o)

45fps doesn't sound too bad at all to me. I haven't noticed chug on games until the fps get down to around 15-20. And that's awesome work for just one night of tinkering. Very impressive.

What took the longest time, was placing all the led actors into the stage.

    224 22x22 actors.

    fun fun fun

The actual coding part was pretty easy.

Love that you do this kind of stuff, Sparky! The demo actually looks awesome to me :D

Am thinking I might convert it to the cheating way of doing it. (the frame rate isn't so bad...but all those actors onscreen make for terrible loading times) and turn it into a simple little game like from the late 70's

Or maybe a compilation of silly little games.. Shooting, racing, and er......another one I have not thought of yet :o)

Wonderful! But now go back to work on the Mode 7 template, Sparky. It's your fault when I miss the release date for iF-Zero!1!11 ;-)

    lol.
the mode7 thing is still going on in my brain.

    'm still not sure it's 100% possible.
I've tested a few different ways of doing it, but nothing looking tooooo good so far....but it's still in the works. :o)
