edited November -1 in Working with GS (Mac)
Hello everyone, in the next few weeks, I'll be getting my Mac and iPhone and cannot wait to try Gamesalad. I have been researching, reading, watching videos of Gamesalad before I start. So I would like to ask you to share your experiences. May be this thread will also help other newbies like me. What we need to DO, and What we shoudn't DO? That way, this might help me to somewhat prepare when the day finally comes.

Thank you.

    welcome ....

    1. I would remember to search for an answer before posting for help. Best bet is google the word and use the site name to limit your searches to just Gamesalad (IE: particles site:gamesalad.com). (The search feature in Gamesalad.com is close to useless imo).
    2. If you use a template you have purchased off someone or downloaded one of the many available for free ... take some time to 'make it your own' by changing the gameplay, moving and adding new actors and most importantly add your own artwork.
    3. Enjoy Gamesalad for what it has (don't fret too much on what's missing) and don't wait around for hours on end for an update to the software or posts from the GS team .... okay this last one was really for me ... just kidding it actually was kind of fun in a weird way.

    Anyways .... have a great time, look forward to your work and to help if I can.

    1) Save... A LOT.
    2) avoid constrains and timers, prefer interpolate
    3) don't divide by zero:)

    * Save As every 10 minutes or so
    * Quit and restart GS every 10 minutes
    * Makes games that you enjoy playing
    * Don't let poor reviews get you down to much
    * Don't let poor sales get you down
    * Don't give up
    * Backup your work hourly/daily

    Never ever try to to drag'nDrop or copy+paste functions from other projects, because it will make your project useless.

    I had to learn it in the hard way...

    Don't constrain at attribute to itself, directly or indirectly.

    Do play

    WOW, thank you so much everyone. Those are some great advices and tips. I would for sure keep in mind about those things I shouldn't do with GS. Thank you again.

    Would you mind sharing what would happen if I did that?

    Ok I'm probably gonna sound retarded for asking this, but oh well. How do you avoid spawning an actor when you need the outcome that using the Spawn Actor behavior brings? Thanks.

    @Imperium - I believe what he meant was that when you start copying and pasting other work into your own often times there are a lot of attributes and actors that are called upon or used in the code. For example, I used some code from one of the tutorials in my game, I was having all sorts of collision problems and was very frustrated with it. For 2 days I had no idea why I couldn't get things to work right... I randomly looked at the line of code and wondered why I had it, deleted it, and Voila!, no more collision problems!

    Just be careful what you copy and paste, and try and 'know' what you're bringing into your own stuff from other's stuff...

    Good luck to you!

    Keep the actor off the screen until you need it. Then change its x y position to simulate a spawn. To destroy something you need later move it off screen.

    I meant, if you literally open two projects and try to drag and drop actual rules from one project into another project, it will mess up your build and nothing will work.

    You will get a white screen if you start your project again and nothing else.

    I don't think, they "fixed" it, so I wouldn't even try :-)

    Maybe it is working now, I don't know, because I didn't try it after it messed up my build and destroyed a weeks's work about a year ago.

    I haven't had that problem lately. It is true that there used to be absolutely no copying and pasting from one project to another but seems to work now. I would always save as instead of save so that you have lots of backups. I would do this whether you are copying and pasting or not.

    Oh, I see. Great thing to know. And yes, I would agree with "save as" to have more backup.

    sorry if this is a bit late, but the one thing that i can add is this, every once in a while gamesalad may get a little glitchy, for example if your building a game and something simply should work, but it doesn't, then try to change one attribute, or rule, or anything, and then change it back to the same thing you had it on, sometimes this will fix the problem, thats really all i can say. oh yaa, and just save a lot too.
