Remaking my first Game from Scratch. Think it's a good idea?

I'm remaking my game from Scratch for learning purposes. Considering GameSalad stuff probably did about 40% of it for me. I'm using the old one as a guide line, So far so good. Deffinately alot more tidy and organised, however doesn't seem to have the same feel as the old. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

What you guys think.

Good move, or nah?

Obviously I know a lot more now and have the old one as a guide line, but yeah.

Express your opinions and experiences please! Thank you : )

Probably a good thing. I rebuilt mine from the ground up too because I had to, (the 0.9.0 upgrade broke my ancient legacy code). However, it was so much better as it gave me a chance to re-evaluate some of my decisions and make much better creative choices.
So if you even have to ask this question, the answer is probably yes.
    Good luck with it all!

Yeah, it's a great idea, you will learn a lot doing it.

Bad move. Here's something worth reading: http://makegames.tumblr.com/post/1136623767/finishing-a-game

Especially pay attention to rule 11.

I know it inspired me to keep pushing through even though there's always more you can change and a game is never truly finished.

Very interesting post Forklift. I've actually been enjoying re making it now seeing what I can do, But I think you're right. I think remaking the first game is a good idea for learning purposes. The first one is basically done though, so I will just compare them once i've done.

    Thanks!

    Forklift-

Really like that article. Perhaps there should a sticky for links to great pieces on general approach to the design of games in the Game Design Forum where such thinks can be found easily? And maybe suggestions could be made to a Sous Chef who moderated it? I would certainly enjoy those that others found and perhaps a poll on each one might suggest it usefulness (but if they were in one thread I suppose that that would not be possible?)...

    ozboybrian-

There is much to be learnt by going back and redesigning an app, but also going forward to new apps with the experience you have gained along the way. It is more a case of just taking in how and why you have done something, the problems and fixes, and the solutions. A working diary and notes really help, and possibly.... just possible... in a new fangled paper based, digitally controlled pad with graphite cursor with realtime feedback and instantaneous switching between drawing and writing modes ; )

The most successful man I know spends time at the end of each day writing down a critique of what has happened, what could be done better, and what he has learnt. I just jot things down randomly so perhaps I don't learn as much as I could, and am certainly not as rich as he.
