photoshop CS3 can make amazing looking menus and icons. It is simply down to the skills of the user.

Doesn't get any better than Photoshop or Illustrator. Either one is good for both of those things. If art isn't your thing...Someone here has a app icon template, but I don't remember who. Someone will chime in with the link I'm sure.

Well since you opened the door for a plug. The Stacks Level Select Template comes with nice Level icons designed for high resolution. You can check it out from the link below.
@Slickzero. I don't think thats the template you were talking about But I figured I might as well let him know.

Yes, Photoshop is really good. However you can achieve very similar results with less expensive apps like Pixelmator, Gimp or ArtText.

No real way to explain how to make an amazing icon in Photoshop, but you can look online at literally hundreds of thousands of Photoshop tutorials, and that template that tenrdrmer has is awesome, and would have 90% of the work done for you. You'd just have to tweak it a bit so it doesn't look exactly the same.

Other than that, look up Photoshop tutorials, like I said, hundreds of thousands of them.

    Here's a couple...

    Hope that helps.

Are you a pro Artist? Cause that how you use it like a pro. You need to not only have a solid understanding of how Photoshop works but you also need to have that natural Artist ability that true pro artists have. With the natural stuff i'd say you need years of classes to get it down.

Not that I am saying that this is amazing, but by just using some of the layer styles in photoshop it took about 10 minutes to make this one for an update I submitted today.

    image

Just using inside stroke, a little bevel and emboss and some shadow.

Yeah, it's like everything else. Either you got it, or you pay someone else that does. Photoshop takes years to master. I suggest taking tutorials every day, they will get you up and running.

I almost forgot this one too, this site is where I learned most of the tricks i use still to this day. These tutorials are over 10 years old, but just look at those graphics.

  • StusAppsStusApps Member, PRO Posts: 1,352
Need to upload it online somewhere, then use the following:

    <img src="http://whateverwebaddress.jpg"

also you need to have a '>' at the end, but if I put that in it will disappear.

If you can make something that looks like my profile picture then it is about 5 minutes to turning it into a cool icon using photoshop.

in fact, let's see what I can do with it in 5 minutes. I'll repost in a few mins and tell you how I did it.

Ok, to do this I did the following.

-Took my original image, open in photoshop and create a layer from the background
-Creating a rounded rectangle with a radius of 75px over the top on a new layer
-Used the magic wand to select the shape, then hid it's layer
    -Inverted the selection and cut
-Then using layer styles I added an inside stroke with a gradient fill
    -Added bevel and emboss
    -Added an inside shadow
-Then added my image back over the top as a new layer so that in places some bits can be sticking out of the frame.

I know that probably doesn't make too much sense. But my recommendation is to learn how to use some of photoshop. Particularly how the layers work properly and the layer styles.

So far with GS I have made about $25000 gross.

I guess it's down to the original picture being a bit more basic on the dynamite fish one, that and I was working fast without all the original art to hand at the moment.

It took about 8 months to make that money.

@MarkOnTheIron - I agree a template psd file would be the way to go here I think

sure, send me a message. It sometimes takes me a couple of days to spot the new messages due to the forums terrible alert system.
