Do you read instructions? Or just start playing?

I'm considering whether to make an "instructions" scene, or just to put the instructions in the first couple levels. I thought it would make an interesting poll/topic.

Do you read instructions? Or just start playing?

I personally just jump in, and see if I can't figure it out myself.

    Depends on the Game.
Though I prefer to have instructions in the first level or two as a tutorial type thing then mess with reading separate instructions.

instruction levels you have to "pass" before starting? annoyance. I say, just have instructions up in the background of the first levels

I think instructions need to be there for when you need them but most people don't want to "study" as they want instant gratification. That's what most of those apps are about.
Hopefully most apps are fairly simple to play anyway, right? That's part of the appeal.
