I have a game running about 35 frames a sec. How many frames would that translate to on a 3rd Gen?

Not exactly sure, but I would guess around 45-50. I would think that 35 on a 3rd gen means you are good to go.

I need to sell one of my ipods as I'm low on funds. I've decided to sell my 3rd gen and keep my 2nd gen... that way I can make sure all my games run on older systems ;-)

I have a scene that's running between 38-40 fps on iPhone 4. Do you think this will crash on the older devices?

How to test FPS on the iPod 2G, if graphics made for Retina Display?

With the GS viewer just like any other app.

Hard to tell. it's possible but FPS is not what crashes an it's normally Memory usage. It will prob run poorly on and old device though.

Is it possible to build the viewer into the Iphone simulator in Xcode with a the particular gen device you want to test spec-ed in the simulator and then use that to test in?

You would not be able to run accelerometer related stuff, but keyboard commands might be subbed in test functions and and speed.
