New artwork. The color settings in GameSalad are over the whole image as far as I know. I dont really know what any of the blending stuff is so that maybe something to try but I dont think it will do anything like that.

Yup, Jon and tenrdrmer are right there. You'll need to make another image in Photoshop, put a gradient - white/black/coloured (enough to cover your actor) then to transparent. This overlays your actor on the screen. When you want it used, move it the direction/speed you want. It'll have to be constrained to the actor if the actor is moving, sure you know. Hope it helps.
If you want to do it just to the actor, if you have photoshop and animated characters I would set this up as an action after copying a black/white gradient to memory. This way if you paste as part of your action you will get the same result across all the frames. You will have to partial erase part of the image using the gradient as the select. It can also be done in after effects.
