Audacity on mac for editing and timing, and for making music from apps- Garageband, Thumbjam, Fairlight, Itabla pro, Funkbox, MoDrum, SP Pro, Bassline, iMS-20, Beatwave, and Nanostudio on ipad (some work on iphone and touch).

For samples of real sound- www.freesound.org

    hope that helps

How do you guys add the .mp3 codec to Audacity? i've downloaded the file from their
site, but just can't seem to get it to work when i want to convert/export something to .mp3.

going to .ogg is no problem.

btw, i use Audacity for sound, Garageband, and adobe soundbooth.

Here's a good site for music as well

For beginners, I prefer audiotool. It's a user-friendly software that you can get for free at the google chrome app store.

SunVox! It does EVERYTHING and is completely free. It's an incredible tool and has a beautiful, intuitive interface. GREAT for chiptune sounds, too!

I use Logic, and then Native Instruments for music or samples and my own recordings for SFX. Currently have had no worries with my set up, though my Macbook Pro is starting to show its age when I'm working on big projects.
