  I think particles.
  
  Give the particles the following properties (done from mind, I might miss some)
  Particles: 10?
  Particle startup time: 1 second?
  Lifetime: 1-3 seconds
  Emitter: (0,0)
  Direction: 180
  Speed: 0
  Size: [size of actor]
  Change size to 0 during [particle lifetime]
  Color: pure white/none
  Rotation and angular velocity: 0
  Image: [actor's image with 50% transparency]
  
  I believe that should do the trick

  Actually, you would want the direction the rotation of the ball.

  The way I do it is with actors, that's probably a lot more heavy on the processor XD
