does the viewer always use Retina resolution images?

I'm testing on an iPod 1 and an iPod 4. I noticed that the image memory usage is the same for both.
Does this mean that the viewer always uses the high res images?
If it used the lower resolution images shouldn't the memory footprint be 4x smaller?
Can I expect a performance improvement when I publish?

Yes I think right now the viewer is still using only high res. You should see better performance on the older devices through an adhoc.

I'm using 0.95 and the viewer uses the standard res images when RI is ticked. I can see a clear difference in the RAM when RI is not ticked.
