What are promo codes, and how do I give away free games to certain folks?

The name says it all. What are promo codes?
Also, I'm trying to raise funding on Kickstarter.com, and I wish to offer a free copy of the game to my funders, but how do I do it?

    In the iTunes Connect listing for the current live version of your app, there should be a button to download promo codes.

    You give them the code... and then they go to the appstore and click on redeem and then enter your code that you gave them and your app downloads... All codes can only be used once...
