Is this normal?

testing my game so far on the ios simulator, and its averaging between 51mb-55mb of memory usage, sounds high to me, is that fine/normal?

    yes it is! my game is at 100 mega! lol

    anyway if u wanna improve it a bit replace you change image and animation with change attribute => self => image

    iOS simulator is not a good test environment. You need to test on a physical device to actually test performance.
