Just wondering how you guys go about creating a video clip for your game? What programs you use etc. I've come across a few which have been quite well done, and am wondering what's involved.

Thanks!

what do you mean by video clip,

creating a video, to promote the game, like an advertisement?
video clip that's played during the game, like a cut-scene, introduction, etc?

Sorry I should have been more specific. Yes an advertisement is what I meant.

You can use final cut pro or adobe premiere pro for editing or you can use after effects for more cool effects.
    Personally i use premiere pro.

I understand those programs which 3d10 mentioned are for editing, but what program do you use to actually record gameplay?

Quicktime has an screen recording option. You can record from it.
Choose file and then new screen recording.

Or if you want some professional needs then you can buy screenflow a very good screen recording software for mac.

Oh if you have quicktime you can screen record with that,
what i do is record what i make when I'm playing then add effects in motion and edit in final cut

Thanks 3d10 and LeonardDeveloper, but would q/time record your whole screen though? Obviously I would only need a very small part of my screen recordered (the part where the game is). Or is this where video editing software comes in where it perhaps allows you to trim the recordered screen?

Right. There the video editor comes into play.To actually edit. You can trim it.

Adobe AE, loved it. You can edit your whole project with it, including audio, simulate 3d and produce thousands of cool effects. Also it's a very good tool for creating graphics for your games (specially animating and exporting sequences of png files with transparency). I already knew photoshop when I started with After Effects 4 months ago, around the same time I started using Gamesalad. I made my first video and I am very happy with the results considering it's one person operation. Here is the link. Cheers.

for creating videos, i would recommend:

    Windows:
    Camtasia for screen-recording.
    Sony Vegas for video-editing.

    Mac:
    Screenium for screen-recording.
Final cut pro for simpler video-editing.
Adobe After Effects for complex video-editing.

depends what exactly your goals at to what you should use, if your just piecing some footage together and trimming parts, then something like final cut pro is good, however if you plan on creating advanced visual effects or key-framing multiple layers of footage with masks etc then go with After Effects.
