Why do "provisioning profiles" expire?

I just got a notice on my iPhone that my provisioning profile will expire in 29 days. Why? What is the point of the "provisioning profile" and why is there a time limit?

I just remember setting it up & it was a tedious and annoying time. Now, I have to hunt down the tutorial and do it again.

Does anyone have info on how to set it permanently?

They expire so you cannot just use them to distribute your apps without using the app store. The point is for testing not long term use. If yo want a permanent one you need to publish it to the app store.

there really not as tedious and annoying as they seem the first time you make them. Once you get use to it there a breeze. And no you cant set one up permenatly they alwasy expire after a certain amount of time (except for appstore)

Damn... Oh well. Looks like I'll have to commit the procedure to memory.
