GS Project Resizer

Hey there everybody

I've bought the GS Project Resizer from DBA. After that, i tried to resize my iPhone-project to iPad Landscape. It works well but all my retina images are now in a not good quality. When i import now my iPad-Sized images they are not in a good quality aswell. Had anyone of you the same problem with that? Any help?

Example: I had an actor in my iPhone-game. Size 250x75
This actor is in iPad Size 536 x 175 or something like this. Now, when i import the graphic for this actor (iPad-sized) (image size 536 x 175) its not in a good quality but i've imported an image that has exactly the same size as the actor.

Hope somebody had the same problem and can help me :)

Every image you import into GS much be an even number when divided by 2 or it will blur.

    Good dimensions;

    52 x 60 = 26 x 30
    640 x 960 = 320 x 480

    Bad dimensions

    536 x 175 = 268 (ok) x 87.5 (bad)

    Change it to 536 x 176 so it would be 268 x 88 when divided by 2

    Hey,
The resizer is not increasing the quality of the images , so obviously if your actor is 536x175 , you gonna need to import a new-bigger image if you want it to look sharper ,
You said you did it , but how did you got from 250x75 to 536x175? is it a vector image?
Also , try to keep it on even numbers in your images , meaning instead of using 536x175 , use 536x176 .
GS sometimes blur odd pixels images , because of the half pixel" thats left .

EDIT: I guess I'm too slow ;) beefy beat me

Thanks beefy but thats not the problem. When I import an image (512x512) on an actor (512x512) the image has not a good quality. But When i iport a 1024 x 1024 on that actor, then it's good quality. I don't know why this is, after i resized a project.

Edit: @P-O-M i think my problem is not of corse of the half pixels, i think it's a problem with the resizer

but how did you got your image size from 250x75 to 536x175? is it a vector image?

@P-O-M no that are only example numbers. Because the resizer multiple the x numbers with 2.4 or something and the y numbers with 2.13 i thought. I haven't a problem with my images. My images are ok :) but i've a problem with the quality of the images in the gs creator. Don't know why.

Have you resized any of your projects with the GS Project Resizer?

    Hi Benjamin,

DBA has their own forum to support their software. You're best bet is to post over there.

    @Benjamin
Although Jonathan is correct about getting the best support from DBA forums ,
    Ill just add ,
When taking an image in size - 250x75 and stretching it to 536x175 it is natural that you see a drop in quality , unless I'm missing something .

    Cheers.

Trust me, it won't be the software, it'll be what you're doing. As Jon has said, head over to there, shoot them a message and they'll get you fixed up.

@jonmulcahy Yes i'll write an email to UtopianGames. But i think here are a lot more people, that can help me an had the same problem perhaps :)

Edit: ok ill head up over there. At least to P-O-M yes i know that with the pictures. :) But the numbers i've written above are just examples. It would be rigt if you stretch from 250x75 to 160.8 =)
    But thanks P-O-M

    Cheers

Why give examples of numbers you're not actually using?
If any numbers of pictures are un-even and when divided by 2 on importing into GS they will blur. This isn't the actors size you set, the actual size of the image on importing. If you're stretching a standard image to be iPad size as well that will also cause loss of quality.

Benjamin mate , you probably know that giving us fake details will cause us to reply with meaningless solutions to you problem , hence it will not be solved .
Try to be more accurate next time .

@P-O-M ok, will make it better next time :)

I've received now an answer from Darren. He said that i must change all image names and then i must drag the new images to the actors. I hope this works, will try this later today.

There's no need to change image names...i think you misunderstood the mail.

The problem must be with the images...are they 72dpi?

    Darren.
  • Benjamin_m5Benjamin_m5 Member Posts: 646
Some of them are 72dpi. But most of them are 96dpi because with my program i can't make 72dpi with transparent pixels. I don't know why?! Will post a few images here to show you later.

GS images must be 72dpi ... if not they blur. What program are you using?
  • Benjamin_m5Benjamin_m5 Member Posts: 646
I've used 96dpi images in my first game because i don't know that then. But i think with that game is all ok.

Program is Paint.NET but most i work with photoshop. But the images, that are not in good quality are in 72dpi. Can't explain that to me. will post images soon.

Photoshop > change image size > set dpi to 72 - If you are currently on 96 it will probably adjust your size smaller a little bit and then just increase back once you set the dpi to 72. Then save as .png.

However if you are creating in paint.net and exporting from there, then bringing into photoshop and adjusting, it will likely distort. You need to set this in the program you create from.

Can you confirm the following 3 points?

    All images are 72 dpi.
All sizes of the images (not the actors in GS) are even numbers and when divided by 2 are still even numbers.
The actor sizes in GS are the same as the image size (if you are not using retina) or half the size of the image size if using retina.

If you don't meet the 3 conditions above then you will get problems! I can't explain it any more clearer, its not the resizer, its what you're doing with your images.

    Hope you sort it.

Ok. i will change all my 96dpi to 72dpi. The other two points are ok!

    Thanks much beefy :)

OK here are the pictures. Can you see the quality difference in the font, the arrows and the back button?

This is the screenshot in the GS-creator:

And this is the original picture:

You're really not following this dpi thing are you?

Here is your original in Photoshop at 95.987 dpi.

    image

Here is what the resolution would drop to when changing the dpi to 72 - Note the size drops when decreasing the dpi.

    image

And here is what it looks like now that it is in the correct format (size and dpi).

    image

So now take my last picture, drag it to your desktop and import that into GS. It has a different file name than your original so it won't just replace it, once imported into GS you will need to drag the image from the image folder on top of your actor to replace it and tell it to use this new picture.

    Here is a demo i knocked up to show you your fault;

    http://www.mediafire.com/?e1c8csl2wyfuxb6

On scene 1 is your picture at 95 dpi, when imported to GS it doesn't import in at a size of 1024 x 768, it imports at 768 x 576 as GS needs a DPI of 72. This is shown as the size it drops to when you just change the dpi, effectively thats what GS is doing on import, changing the dpi but then the size is screwed up. You're then taking this now smaller picture of 768 x 576 and stretching it to 1024 x 768, thats why it looks rubbish.

Now scene 2 is my picture, the 1 i fixed for you (by changing the dpi 1st to 72 and then the size back to 1024 x 768). You'll see it imports at the correct size of 1024 x 768, the actor is set at that and you don't need to stretch the image, it looks sharp as it should.

Thanks much beefy for this details. Now, i know why my images are smaller if i drag it to the scene :) That helped me a lot.

I've heard about 72dpi a few months ago, but i didn't know why they should be 72dpi. Now i know that!! Thanks very much.

    Will try this one out.

I used project resizer to down scale our iPad app worked great! Just needed to change x + y numbers to match new screen size but overall it saved me days of work!
  • Benjamin_m5Benjamin_m5 Member Posts: 646
Wow beefy...tried it out now!!! That's amazing. Just make a 72dpi image, drag it on the actor and then it's much better quality!!! GREAT!!!

    Thanks so much beefy :)
