Some considerations on GC Achievements

Hi,

2 days ago I started a thread on Touch Arcade to announce my new game. It received some good comment but it also was the place were a discussion on achievements started.

I will post here some of the comments.

«I like it! Are there achievements in the game? If not are there plans to add them?
Excuse me for my achievement whoring, but I'm being pretty rigid this year.»

«some people, like myself, don't really care about leaderboards. There was a thread on this a while back asking people about leaderboards. Most seemed to not care that much. Most people, especially casual gamers, would rather have achievements over leaderboards. However, having both is ideal. There are plenty of ppl with backlogs smaller than mine that refuse (or at least try) to buy games without achievements.
Achievements are pretty important in games if you ask me, especially when you're on a platform that has so many games to offer. Use me for example: My method of dealing with my backlog problems is to cut out a lot of games that don't include GC achievements.
Also, leaderboards aren't that fun when you're the only one on them for a significant amount of time. This has happened to me before. That or there's only a few other people.»

«Yeah I am the same. There are, and I have so many games to get through that I decided that if there are no achievements I won't be buying the game anymore. I know quite a few people that feel like that. Not adding achievements is a big mistake in my opinion. I'm pretty sure there are lots of people that feel the same. Achievements if done right, add something to the game so how can you see them as redundant? IMO Apple need to make Game Center with leaderboards and achievements mandatory. No achievements = No sale»

«However, you have to think about the consumer. TBH, I could care less about leaderboards. I have so many games that I know I'll never be on the top of anything at least not for long. Plus, even with that I always manage to be in the top 10-20% of most games I play, so think about people's attention spans when it comes to games. Achievements probably influence them to play more of the game then leaderboards do.»

«Add me to the achievement want list. I don't see how achievements can be perceived as redundant to leaderboards. They are two completely different things entirely. Leaderboards mean nothing to me. In a game like this, if achievements were there, I would try my best to collect all the stars, without them though I would merely try to complete the level and move on. Achievements add limitless more replay in my opinion.»

In the end the ones who made the comments (senior members at TA) bought my game because even without achievements it looked interesting. But some points they made were valid.

Do the lack of GC Achievements block you from buying a game?

No , but I'm not a good example , cause I see things from a developer point of view , as for the costumers ..
There is a high percentage of costumer that achievements matters a lot to them , and the lack of it might cause them not to buy a game ,
luckily for us , GameCenter achievements is right around the corner .

Im glad they bought your game after all even without this feature , cause its really deserve attention.
I saw you mentioned in TA that you will not put achievements in the game in the future .. why not?
It can only benefit both sides imo
