Loading apk onto nook color - HELP?

Does anyone know how to get a nook color to allow me to install an apk file that I downloaded from my gmail account?

I've done a dozen google searches and I am worried that may not be possible.

I haven't done it yet, because I haven't picked up a nook, but try looking here.

I've only read a small bit on how to do it, but I believe you need to root the device and then load it through a terminal program. (Don't quote me on that though) Whatever the case, I know it's not just as easy as emailing it to yourself and installing it. At least not the first time.
