Well, get creative! Try sketching out some ideas on paper and then moving to the computer. Once you have something, post it back here so we can critique it.

What @theCodeMonters mentioned is what I use. I still use the first version, and that's the bomb. So, the 2nd is about 100x better. Also, you can save your images, so if you need it for later or to scale it, no problem. :D

Have you seen this thread? AWESOME tutorials by @SpriteAttack in Inkscape not about icon designs but just using Inkscape.

Go to file > document properties > thenchange dimensions to 512x512. It took me a little while to figure that out myself.

The picture should be 512x512 pixels and 72DPI. You can open the icon in preview, then go to tools Adjust Size... make sure the width and height are 512 and the resolution is 72.

Make sure you save a copy of the icon file in .png format.

File > save a copy > choose .png

This is starting to sound like you don't know anything about computers. Both @Apptek and I have answered your question which was extremely simple at that. Maybe you should read up on how to use Inkscape basics before asking us if what we are saying is over your head.

I just don't know about the app, preview.

The default application for viewing images is preview. You can open it by just opening the image. If you don't know what preview is, I really think you should go to the Apple website and watch/read all the guides for Mac.
