Game Development - Artist Monolog

Day 96
I can’t put my finger on the exact time that it happened, but did it ever happened to you that you start a discussion on top and before you know it, you hit rock bottom? Well, it happened to me… It is not clear when the discussions went from:

EMH: Please do my art
SE: Nope
EMH: Please?
SE: No
EMH: Please!
SE: Na
EMH: Please!?
SE: Noooo!
EMH: Please.
SE: No!
EMH: Please?
SE: Ok
EMH: Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! :)

To…

SE: I worked all night on this one, what do you think?
EMH: Sloppy. It is one pixel short, odd size, eyebrow is wrong color and frankly a bit spooky.
SE: I’m sorry, let me try again… :(
SE: This one?
EMH: Eyes should be half way; hand is looking weird and who told you to add a hat?
SE: Sorry :(

I decided to see if the community could help me understand how things got to this point. To do that I’ll need to take you 3 months back to a sunny day somewhere in Australia.



Day 1
I always saw it as a compliment that many developers approached me about doing art for their games. However, after getting so many daily emails wanting art I just had to take a break and refuel. So I took my surfboard and went to the one place that I could find peace, the beach – or so I thought.

    Finally had enough huh....join the club. I've been railing about this type of crap on here for months and got called mean, labeled a trouble maker and all around Ahole. I'm all for being helpful and supportive but somewhere along the line around here we went from reality to some kind of candy land existence, where the peer pressure is to drink the forum cool aid or get marked with a scarlet letter culturally. This forum only a year ago was rich with ideas and great developer dialogue, now it's a code my game and/or tell me how great I am. I used to really enjoy this forum, now I just read it mostly for comic relief. I hope the Pro Forum comes online soon, then maybe I will come out of retirement. @spriteattack I don't blame you and I support your right to own your own life and say no to whatever you want! BTW I think you are über talented and with that kind of talent I wouldn't take anyone's s$&t!

    Sorry you feel that way but I totally understand.
    You need an elephant skin to stay happy sometimes.
    I offer professional services as a graphic designer and web builder for decades and the stuff you have to put up with at times is simular as what happens here.

    Just so you know: I do appreciate your input (and the input of lots of others).
    And I love your artwork.

    I used to have a boss who's saying was "no good deed goes un-punished" I find myself using that often as I get older....

    Wow, I've obviously been blessed with great clients. Maybe you're to nice?
    I would say:"I will have to charge you extra for the next revision(s)" and if they refuse, you move on to the next project. Its not worth getting burned-out over clients like the one you're describing.

    Why do I have a feeling everyone here got this post the wrong way ?! Maybe just me.. But as I see it SpriteAttack meant for a positive post not negative..
    Heh, maybe I'm just in a good mood today so I see things in a positive way, anyway.. The artwork looks adorable as always man :)

    I saw that one, but I agree with POM, SpriteAttack story is on a funny/positive note and not a negative one. I guess only SpriteAttack can tell us, but you don't draw a comic if you are going to rant on a negative note.

    Reading his post again, I'm quite sure it is a story with a happy end... Otherwise, why put it on the annouce your game forum?

    Who would have thought? A developer? On the beach? On top of it, it seems that I couldn’t shake this guy off, everywhere I went he soon followed. I tried to push him off gently (and not so gently), but it seems to create an opposite reaction and his demands were only getting more annoying and fairly personal.

    @SpriteAttack do we have to wait a full day for day 3? I saw you started the thread as Day 96, so we might be here for awhile.

    I guess he can draw himself in anyway he likes... blue eyes, blond hair, killer abs... that's the benefit of being the artist in the mix :)

    And than a developer comes in with a simple request and @SpriteAttack gives him an Austrian Afro? Doesn't seem fair ;)
