Word Games and Kids Games always do well, then puzzlers. Shooter are normally made by larger companies with a lot of pr.

IMO you're thinking about this all wrong.

Make the game YOU want to make. In nearly every "indie" success story their game has been their passion. Creating and executing on your vision should be your goal. The question you should be leading with is how can I execute this to the best of my ability.

Making a game based on what sells the best / what is currently popular is (again IMHO) doing it wrong.

even if your app is downright simple but a certain group of people likes it, you will make money. even the most awful apps will make money. it is just how you polish and market your app. just brainwash your customers to buy your app buy stating it was featured for a few days in etc. but dont expect your app to make millions of dollars. possible but quite hard.

I'm not having to much luck with my word game, but my puzzle game is doing alright.

But as @TheMoonwalls said, every well made game does well, I believe. However, if for some reason it doesn't get noticed on the App Store, you have a good sense of accomplishment for creating an excellent game. :)

If you're looking for a game to make, just pick up one which already exist and try to improve its gameplay by adding some new features. On one hand you can take it as inspiration and example, and if it worked well, player will gladly receive another title from the same genre.

The point is that with additional features, they will be gladly surprised and give credit to your game.
