how long to take you to get this far? artwork and code
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@clock - Well we started it last September. The first gameplay style - (the endless runner level) was the quicker part to make. The newer platforming/combat level has taken longer as it's more complicated.

As someone just starting with GS and working on my prototype, it's very inspiring to see something this beautiful made with GS.

re: the vid - my suggestion/question is.. will she be fighting some humanoids too? To me there's something a bit unsatisfying about fighting blobs with kung fu. I'd definitely like to fight some people who could kunfu back, or just some monsters with more humanoid form. Cheers.

@bloomer - Thanks for the comments :) Yeah, they'll be loads of different hazards in the finished game. But I'm sure we'll post more development vids before that so peeps can see how it's progressing.

At some point in the future I hope it gets easier to get a bit of games press for our upcoming games (without being capcom or nintendo).

Hard to even get an email reply much of the time...

But AppAdvice are being nice lately - so thanks to the guys there: http://appadvice.com/appnn/2012/02/honey-tribe-studios-next-ios-title-ashley-ao-is-an-anime-influenced-adventure-coming-in-2012

    And on an amusing note...

Apparently someone out there is not only an expert hacker but also a master of time travel... But how nice of them to port our unfinished game to ps3 and xbox!

(By the way I wouldn't actually click on the links, I'd assume it's some kind of malware)

Screens look lovely Shaz ... And how amusing to have your unfinished game ported! haha
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@beefy_clyro - Yeah I'm liking what the artist is making for this one.

WIth the friendly porters - I might email them and ask if I can borrow their time machine too.

Well we've been a bit quiet with Ashley Ao. But we've been steadily working on it and now have a new gameplay preview. Also, we just launched on IndieGoGo! today. Please help by posting it on facebook and twitter!

(If any forum mods read this please replace the vid in the first post with this newer one - cheers!)

I don't understand how will you give iOS version to contributors. Promo keys are limited, is there some other system that I don't know?

We'll gift them on the release day. There was another app that used a password system to unlock content. Originally Apple were fine with that. But then they changed their minds, which is a shame as it's a more fun way of doing it.

So we'll have to stick with the gifting system.

Contact who? App Advice? Yeah I send out press kits to anyone I can think of each time I have a new video.

Cool - the development vid is on the front page of gametrailers. Feel free to leave a score out of ten if you watch it!

Hard to say as a %. As you can see the core mechanics are done. Need to do more level design and the upgrade system next.

And here's the development vid we made - it's the same vid we use on the IndieGoGo page

Bonus points if you can name all the retro games in there!

From what i saw is only 1 level there. To be honest, your project is way too much work for 2 people. Especially for the artist. I am artist myself. Those kind of so call "painting-like art" is very time consuming to do. I've been ask "how long to take u to finish this and that", because i really want to see how can you guys accomplish this big project. Well if i were you i would choose other kind of art. Maybe simple one. You know.. easier for u and him.

Shaz is an ambitious guy, and I think that if he wants to finish it - he will do it :)
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@clock - It wouldn't make any sense to suddenly change the art style. And I wouldn't want to 'cos I happen to like it a lot ;) Yes it is an ambitious project both for myself and Ryan. But that will just make it all the more satisfying for when we finish and release it :)

    @TheMoonwalls - I like what I'm reading - thanks for the support! :)

That's the wrong attitude in my opinion. Good things take time. Simpler art means more generic, like every other game out there. This is coming from a professional artist who does "painting-like art". Besides the more you paint game art, the faster you become. How many of your very favorite games probably took years to complete? Because they know creating something special means putting in the work.
