D-Pad vs Waypoint

I've seen this debate all around game dev sites and was wondering what you guys think.

D-Pad: self explanatory
Waypoint: press a location on the screen and the character moves there and/or interacts

    If you did waypoint and you touched a spot diagonal to the character, unless you have frames of animation for all directions, it will look sloppy. I think the d-pad is the neatest way to go.

    As a gamer, I dislike D-Pad's very much because of the lack of flexibility in movement. I would much rather prefer a joystick or Waypoint movement. From a developer stand-point though, Waypoint movement would be hard to animate a bunch of directions (like @Hapiapps said).
