Graphics look horrible on 3GS but great on 4S & iPad 2

For the first time, this time round on my latest app, i decided to build it for iPad, then downscale it to iPhone, as i usually do it the other way round.

And ive gotten strange results. Ive tested my app on my iPhone 4S, it looks fantastic, tested it on an iPad 2, looks fantastic, tested it on my old iPhone 3GS, it looks terrible! I would of thought if something was wrong the graphics, it would show in the higher resolution device, being the iPhone 4s, but strangely its the opposite.

Any ideas to whats causing this? Heres a screenshot of each device:

iPhone 4s:

iPhone 3GS:

And for some reason, it doesnt look too poor in the iPhone 3GS screenshot, but actually viewing it on the device, it looks horribly blurry/degraded, the screenshot did it some justice.

EDIT: i know iPhone 3GS isnt Retina Graphics, but i mean, it looks excessively poor, like what happens when your images dont have a DPI of 72 and they go blurry, like that.

Only thing i can possible think is, is in the mist of downscaling items to iPhone, i may have changed the aspect ratio of some actors, but surely if this was what was causing this graphic issue, it would also reflect the same results in the iPhone 4s test?

The problem might be uneven image resolution dimensions. (e.g. 201x311 should be for example 200x310)

They look correct to me. All images are 72 dpi. The size is just doubled for Retina screens. 3G just don't look as good.

the size of each image in your project must be divisible by x2

    Es: 240x120 :2 120x60. Ok
    101x47. :2. 50.5x23.5. No

also make sure your iPhone Art is at least 2 times larger than the actor sizes. For example. your 4s Image is only 600x900 but your 3gs image is 320x480 So if its using half the res of the full size image you have supplied the App is actually stretching a 300x450 image out to fill the screen.
