whats the difference between generating and sign app when publish?

in Working with GS (Mac)
i want to get the final file that i will upload to iTunes, so if i click on generate app it tells that my app is on queued and i need to wait, so after a couple of minutes i can click on download, but what about if i click on "sign app" first? do i get the same file for upload to iTunes?thank you

    Download is not used for publishing. You need to generate, and once you see the notification that it is complete, sign it.
