Hate to be a noob, but It's driving me crazy. WHAT IS THE ACCELEROMETER?

I hear it's the basis of all character movement and such! The savior of all gamers!
Somebody tell me what it means!

    Accepted Answer
    The accelerometer is a piece of hardware that detects movement in the real world and translates it into 3d coordinates using 3 angle values, one for each axis. When you tilt your device, the accelerometer detects that movement.
