without having every single actor having an attribute based off of a game attribute cause thats entirely too much work lol cause i have a lot of actors

The black is the background scene color, not an overlying actor. So, lets say you put a 100X100 actor in the middle of your pause screen. When you hit pause, all you'll see is the center actor, overlying your original screen.

so then @liquidgameworks is there any way to make the background transparent for that pause scene?

Add an actor over your entire your pause scene and set alpha to 50% or whatever you prefer.

If you had a transparent background the user could see inside your iPad, and you don't want that !

    ;)

You need to place a panel of colour (a blank actor) in your pause scene and make it partially transparent - this is what would then appear over the scene you want to pause.

so what rule would be placed in the actor then?

no rule, in it's color settings make it's alpha something less than 1. For 50% transparent, make it .5.

the pause scene is transparent to begin with. you don't need to add anything. Even though in the creator it looks black when it runs it will be transparent and you will see what ever scene it was that you pause right underneath anything you place in the pause scene.

if its not transparent its because you have put something in there to make it not transparent.

Right, the only reason to add a background actor (other than to block the images currently on the originating scene) is to darken them by covering them with a black actor that is ~0.7 alpha so that you can see outlines but not words, etc.

when i was trying to do the pause screen transparent another time it wasnt transparent at all

Then you had put a background in the pause scene... Pause has always since day one of pause. been a transparent scene by default

Create a new scene, and do a pause behavior to that screen. you won't even be able to tell its paused, except that everything stopped.
