Yam Yam: Puzzle Guardians.

Ok, so here's my newest game, Yam Yam. It's nearly finished and I should be uploading to the app stores very soon. I started on it in May last year and have been doing *a lot* of iterating on it. Testing changing, testing, changing... for what feels like a long time now! :) I've held off putting a preview out for it because I've changed it so many times.

It's very much a mobile game, I've spent a lo of time thinking about the controls and gameplay to suit the different situations in which it might be played. There's a lot of mastery to it but it's also accessible to 'casual' gamers too.

If you have any constructive criticism or see things that could be improved feel free to post!

Hey looks pretty cool man. I like the master shot

@mounted88 - Cheers, yeah that seems to be adding some good replay value. So once people get good at the game they can revisit the levels and collect all Master Shots.

I asked one tester to delete an old version and test a new version and they really didn't want to wipe all the save data as they nearly had all the Master Shot stars, haha :)

A platformer physics puzzler. Great idea. Can't wait to try it!

Looking super cool as always! Nice job! I'll grab this the minute it's available!

@tatiang Thanks :) Yeah last year I a friend of mine asked me "Are you not bored of side scrollers?" This is after I'd done a game jam where we made an auto-scroller. I was in such a good mood after the jam I thought "No, actually I'm gonna make more and get really good at them." So next I thought what didn't yet exist and decided a target game crossed with side scrolling was an interesting idea.

@Braydon_SFX Cheers! And thanks for always supporting my games :)

    What about Ashley Ao?
  • ShadowMoonShadowMoon Member Posts: 146
i think i left a comment about Ashley Ao 2 years ago. i said that with that kind of graphics (painting) its very difficulty to finish the game. i wonder what happen now?

Testing it was very enjoyable, it has its own uniqueness. Thanks for the opportunity! I'm sure it will do well on the store :)

Love the music and art style.
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@imGua There were some delays with Ashley Ao. So rather than wait around I made some games in the meanwhile - McBank and Yam Yam. So once Yam Yam is finished and released I'll get back and finish Ao.

@Clock Well it's not the art style that held up development. My dev partner for Ao had some personal issues that he had to deal with which has part-caused the delay.

    @POM Cheers Roy :) I really hope you're right!

    @zzap64 Thanks!

The art and animation is done by freelance artist Freddie Fosh. He's been great to work with and I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone who can provide both bitmap and vector based art. I think the combination of the two has worked out well in Yam Yam.

Also I should say thanks to @TheMoonwalls who helped out with making some levels mid-way through the development :)

Cool! I like the art style also.
And I'm sure it has great music :)

Of course it does! :) There are 3 tracks to chose from when you play. The first is the same one from the trailer.

I think it could use a brighter icon because in the trailer the game seemed so energetic and happy (and awesome) and the icon has a dull background and could fit the game better.

Thanks for the feedback. The darker blue backgrounds for the icon seemed to make the red of the character stand out more. But I can try some more things too.

@DanDaMan123 and everyone else too. Any thoughts on these icons? Which background colour makes the character 'pop' the most?

Ok I went with a light blue icon like in the first example.

Here's an example of how the score system works.

There are 3 Lifelings to save on each level so you get 100, 200 and 300 for that.
Then if you use less that 5 ammo you get a bonus. I got a 50 point bonus here as I used 4 ammo.
And I hit the Master Shot so got the 300 seed star bonus.
And then my speed score was 445. You get more points the faster you do each level.

The game is finished now so will upload to the app stores and should be out soon...!

Apple just approved Yam Yam (don't you just love that waiting period ;) ) so it will be out this Thursday 9th...!

    Good to hear.
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@BazookaTime Cheers, yeah it feels like it's been a long time coming with all the testing and refining :)

Also for anyone wondering how I did the flick mechanic, I posted a write up here:

Looks pretty sweet, will check it out for sure. Where can I get some rainbow berries?
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@Braydon_SFX Cool thanks, hope you like it :) There's a lot of mastery in this one, so if you're the kind of gamer who wants to get 100% on a level you'll like the 'Master Shots'.

@SF Deep in the heart of Yam Yam Forest...! Nice to see you on the forums by the way :)

@SF - Nice to see you around! A testament to the game's quality... :)

Nice to get a tweet out from TIGA about Yam Yam :) For those who don't know TIGA are the UK trade body for video games. So they arrange events and stuff for devs and have been lobbying the UK gov to get UK game devs a text break too.

  • BoomshackBarryBoomshackBarry Member Posts: 712
That's awesome - do you know what brought your game to TIGA's attention?
  • HoneyTribeStudiosHoneyTribeStudios Member Posts: 1,792
@BoomshackBarry I've been to a few TIGA events lately. At the last one I was at I showed a demo of the game to the CEO Richard Wilson. He was really friendly and offered to help promote it when it comes out.

So I followed up and emailed one of their event organisers, Nisha Valend - also very nice. And she asked their PR manager to tweet about it.
