Game using ONE actor

I wanna know if anyone has done this, has anyone ever gone and make a full functioning game, but use only ONE ACTOR? And in order to actually make it look like they're different objects, you would to actually edit the individual instances instead of the prototype actor. I would assume it would be tedious to do, but has tried to, or maybe successfully made a fully functioning game with one actor only?

    I guess someone would do this for the same reason(s) they might find it to be a good idea to jump 100 miles on one leg when they could just as well have used both or better yet used a vehicle..

    @cucurbit his game cheer me! looks like it might have used 2 or 3 actors at most, so it could be done, it would just be some what simple. There is always the ability to have one actor and unlock it so that it isn't the same as the prototype so that really makes it possible to have one actor be as many actors as you'd like.

There is always the ability to have one actor and unlock it so that it isn't the same as the prototype so that really makes it possible to have one actor be as many actors as you'd like.

    I wouldn't think so. I just wanted to see if anyone's really actually tried it before.

    Although I do not think this would be a smart thing to do for the appstore, I think it would be great idea for a contest, limiting to 5 sound effects 5 images, and one actor, with no prototype editing. That would be cool.

    It's a holding your breath contest ....for many of us, it's like why? It's not going to be a game, more like a tech demo or alpha. Why limit yourself (or the game)?

    I dont see any reason why it wouldnt be possible.

    As a community that should be supporting each other to reach our goals, we shouldnt be putting each other down.

    It's a holding your breath contest ....for many of us, it's like why? It's not going to be a game, more like a tech demo or alpha. Why limit yourself (or the game)?
    Just to test yourself, to see how much you can do with limited resources

    Okay I guess it's that perhaps you carry yourself as being ADSentertainment. When you have a tag that suggests that you are a studio, this type of stuff seems a waste of time as is kids play (not meaning it is for "kids").

    @RP I agree with you that it's not worth it to try to make your game hold only one actor, but it is quite possible to limit the amount of actors and still have a great game. Although there is usually no point to less actors, I think what ADSentertainment was asking is possibly if you could make a good game with one actor.

    I like the idea of a contest using limited resources or lets say the same set of actors...that kind of challenge would be interesting.

    I get that. "make a good game with one actor'. That's like a finding a fantastic bar that serves one drink. No matter what you do with the one actor (considering the variables) a quality app that folks are going to recognize, it will most likely not be. This ideal has been put to practice in many older games. Go back 8-bit and pre 8-bit era. Know what tiles and tile sets are. Understand what is done to these over and over again to make them feel original and new or used for a new purpose. You have a wide area of possibilities. Rather than paint yourself into a corner and try to change the hue or orientation to make it feel original, use what is at your disposal. But, if you feel the challenge, which I understand, go for it.

    It's not like it's gonna be the same actor in only one game, I meant like, you could change each actor's individual instance code instead of just the prototype, and make it appear like they're different actors, when they're really all the same, just each instance is programmed differently

    JUST SO EVERYONE HERE KNOWS. By one actor, I don't mean all of the actors have the same exact coding. You could edit each instance's code in the scene to make it seem like there are multiple actors when in reality there is only one.

    Technically speaking, based on a bunch of randomising speeds, health and images, a game like AntSmashers would probably be only 1 actor type. im speaking very generally here. Not including scores and what not. but it is pretty much just 1 enemy...

    I find that a bit too limiting in my opinion, as @RP said, it would be more like a tech demo than an actual game. The main thing in this was that you could only edit the instance code.

    Again, I know something like this is pointless, I have no plans on making a serious game that has only ONE actor in it at all. I meant if you could make something using one actor where the actors have their instance code changed instead of all the actors having the same coding.

    Still technically can do that. You dont have to change the image and there is still only 1 actor, you just have to get creative with AI.

    yeah, i suppose with a little work that game could be a one actor game. Although the ants could use a background ;)
