    I found this video very helpful!

    I'm curious whether compressing images will improve the amount of memory the game uses while it is running, or whether it just reduces the file size for loading the game.

    It generally is about file size as images need to be uncompressed on the fly by the phones processor so memory increases due to that.

    Yes this is for getting your game down to size to meet the distribution limits. If you use check preload are you can reduce load times between scenes but just have a longer load at the splash screen.
