what does startup time in particles do?

I'm using particles in my project but I can't figure out what startup time does...
I tried 0 and tried 500 but can't see the difference.
what does it do?

It is supposed to determine how soon the particle begin to spawn off your object.
The time differences work for me.

so when you have 1 they spawn after 1 sec and when you have 500 they start to spawn after 500 seconds and when you have 0 they start immediately to spawn? this is not working with my project...

Yup. Those higher variable don't actually work from what I have experienced. Even at 200 seconds it kicks in at about 4-5 seconds. The particle system in GS has been kinda wonky for some time. Even when you set it to 0 (0.0whatever) it takes time to kick in.

Also make sure that the actor you are editing is inside the inspector window. Not the scene. Any changes you make to the one in the scene may not function properly.

I want to make a explosion with particles but they have to spawn immediately, when it's 0 it still takes time... do you know a better solution?

Try this program for making explosions

What I do for the particle spawner delay problem, is to have an object that spawns the particles offscreen running constantly, and then I call on it to change it's position to the X and Y where I need the particles when an explosion (or whatever you need particles for) happens. Then send it back offscreen.

I believe if you make the startup time higher than the lifetime (or such, not on GS now) then it starts faster. After the startup time it gives a hickup though. But performance wise perhaps better then slickzero's solution (while that is an good idea as well :) )
