Legacy iPhone game to iPad and iPhone 5 resizing help!

olivernolivern Member, PRO Posts: 17

Hi,

I have created a game in the legacy iPhone portrait format (480x320) and I would like to resize it so it works universally on iPad and iPhone 5 with the same level of difficulty. The game is a game in the same sort of format as Flappy Bird (objects to dodge coming from right) so I am interested in a method for adding some space on the left of the screen for iPad and some space at the bottom of the screen for iPhone 5 because these are the areas where size does not affect the difficulty of gameplay. As far as artwork is concerned, the artwork is very high resolution so scaling up shouldn't be a problem. I am sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I have failed to find it after quite a lot of searching so any help would be really appreciated!

Thank you in advance and just ask if you need anymore information!

Creating a universal build is not a simple one solution due to aspect ratios. There are several different techniques that you use in different combinations to get your game to fit. GShelper has a few videos on it. Also you can use the stretch feature as well, which has some drawbacks but proves effective for most. Having said that, it's always best to design a game from the start taking into account all devices one wishes to support. Doing it after the fact is difficult.

Try stretch. You'll be suprised how good it works. Most cases the distortion doesn't look bad.

How do you stretch? Is that different from overscan or letterbox?

I only get Crop or Letterbox next to the device list. Is Crop what you're referring to as stretch?

Thanks you for the all of the suggestions! I have stopped being so lazy and have learned how to work the camera attributes, decided to remake my game for the iPhone 5 and have managed to create a nice method for the iPad, but the legacy iPhone method is now not working! I have created a new thread because it is a separate issue @ http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/67757/legacy-iphone-screen-size-not-detecting-help?new=1 - sorry to be such a pain and thank you all for the help!

  • So the app I am working on has a screen size of Iphone Portrait Legacy. The scenes have a screen size and camera size of 320x480. When testing the app using the Stretch feature, the app works fine and the images appear nicely on 320x586 (Iphone 5 screens) as well as Ipad sized screens. Is it a smart idea to continue developing the app with a 320x480 screen? The app looks fantastic with the Stretch feature, but would Apple deny my app? I guess it would technically be optimized for iphone 4's since it is the screen I am originally developing on.

Apple will not reject your app for using the stretch feature when publishing. All my apps use stretch...all passed.
