What can i use to create my actors

Hey Guys I'm New Here :)

I have been wondering how i can design my figures and them put them in gamesalad
but with what programm do i need to make them? Adobe Illustrator? Photoshop? Gimp? i really don't know and i am a bit lost in this part. also how do i keep track of how big (pixel, pixel) my character is?

If anybody could help me it would be great

    Gimp and inkscape are free I believe. But you can use any, so long as you convert all files to .pngs

    I'd add LodePaint to jigglybean's suggestions. LodePaint is free. I use it for the ones I don't download from open-source sites. I also use it to edit spritesheets. Inkscape is good, but that's more for 3D sprites. I'd also recommend Photoshop CS4 (or higher, but higher would cost you) if you're looking to add a lot of detail to your actors/sprites. And about the sizes, on Windows you can see the image size by right-clicking on the image file and clicking Properties in the context menu. In the Properties menu, click the tab at the top labeled Details. Under the Details tab, look for the word Dimensions, which should be under the Image subtitle (you may have to scroll down). And yeah, all images must be in png format. Spritesheets won't work. If you have a spritesheet, you'll have to cut out each sprite in the sheet and save them as individual png images which can be a real pain.
