How to Make Assets

Where would be the best free place to make assets? I am new to graphic design (2D) please help. My preferrence is to work with pixels but I am open to anything.

    Working with Inkscape would be a good introduction. Check out 2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.com.au for awesome tutorials by @SpriteAttack
