How do you make a "button" on a touch screen that controls an actor

I'm trying to make an on screen "button" to control an actor on an IPhone platform. What I want is for the game user to touch this "button" and cause the actor/player to jump
(for example.) Obviously I am a newbie! Thanks for any input!

    This tutorial shows you how to make an actor move on screen using touch controls. You'd use the same technique to hook up an onscreen button to a jump type movement.
