Recommend a FREE resource to CREATE 2D/3D game assets

Hi Everyone. I'm a HS teacher currently taking advantage of the free trial of Gamesalad. My students are all enjoying learning about game development and design using Gamesalad. Most of my students would like to create their own sprites to use in the game. Can anyone recommend FREE software or sites that I could use to start teaching this to my students? I saw a post recommending asset forge, but as you probably all now its a paid resource. I appreciate any suggestions guys. Thanks in advance.

I have used this for pixel art sprite sheets, but by the looks of it you can also use it for regular sprites.

There is lots of free/open source software for creating images, you might look at GIMP or Krita for pixel art or if you wanted to start with vector and convert to pixel later you could check out Inkscape.

If you're interested I also have a few packs of free art available if you want to use them for any reason. https://jamiecross.itch.io/
