How do updates help your app

Hi Guys,
I was wondering how do updates help your game stay/get in top?
I always read about how good it is to update your app as frequent as possible and I'm not talking about bug fixes but actually to add new weapons or level or features.
But how is this going to help the app stay on top? The ones that got that already got the app are going to get the updates for free.
I would like to understand better how updates can help your app so I'll know if should invest in making new level after the game is released.

    You get pushed back to the top of just released and reviews are started counting again and I certainly notice if they had so I am more likely to look to what has been added if I was sceptical before that and more likely to purchase it. Pocket God is a great example of updates :)

    They Really send you to Just released? Or you have to change de Availability Date?
