Sometimes I make them in Art Text 2 or I buy them.

    Many methods...mostly Photoshop.
For my latest game, EWO SWAT...been using Sketchup and 3DStudio Max too.

Also buy stuff from iStock.com or grab free stuff from wikiMedia

A free and highly capable substitute for 3DStudio is Blender.

I use a variety of iPad apps most of which are cheap but pack a huge punch. If you need someone to do graphics for your game, shoot me an email. Check out garylovestodraw.wordpresss.com for my work.

Sorry forgot to add gimp and inkscape. Both are free to downlOad and are very capable programs.

Give Photoline a whirl. It's cheap and VERY powerful. It's a close second to Photoshop, in my opinion. Bit harder to use, though.

    75% Illustrator and 20% Photoshop. 5% Hire a Artist.

If you're still into pencil and paper like me, it comes in handy when you can scan it or take a picture, then manipulate it with Photoshop or Illustrator.

I agree 1000%, Photoline is about as close to Photoshop as you can get (on the Mac). On the PC you might also want to try Paint Shop Pro.

Forgot about Paint Shop Pro... Corel, right? Used to use that years ago when I used a PC. It was actually the app I used first, very nice. Haven't used it lately but guessing it's still pretty good... no idea how much it is now, though.

I agree that Corel ruined a good thing! All the engineering for PSP is now done in Taiwan, they pretty much fired everyone there back in the Minnesota old JASC office.

Another option is of course PhotoShop Elements. I use that on my PowerBook (won't install on my Mac Mini). It's cheap and easy to use - has pretty much all the features you'd need for game art.

I think for the Mac you are right on about Photoline. GIMP is okay, but personally I hate X11 apps.

Where 81 = C64 code for a dot looking character...

    POKE 1024 + X + Y * 40, 81

I will plot out each dot based on X and Y locations :P

Where do you buy your game graphics if you buy them?
  • IsabelleKIsabelleK Member, Sous Chef Posts: 2,807
I was thinking about buying graphics, but I can honestly tell you, that drawing yourself is the best way.
Two years ago I couldn't draw a straight line, now I can draw almost everything.
You just neead some time and practice.

BTW, Digital-Tutors is a great place to learn all kinds of graphic software. I just started watching tutorials on Illustrator yesterday cause I don't want to keep paying istockphoto for 2D stuff.

And I'm using Softimage mainly. Some Photoshop.

Illustrator and Photoshop. I'm considering using Flash on my next game to help with some animation frames. Flash does some slick tweening.

Of course I always start with pencil and paper. Computer programs are precise, but pencil and paper are much, much faster for generating ideas and first drafts.

I also purchased some stock photos for my apps Tickle Stones and Nesen Probe because, even though I'm a photographer, I didn't have the budget to go to Easter Island, The Great Wall of China and other locals!
