I don't know about Facebook / Twitter... I don't see how it's good promotion. I haven't seen any real success stories from app developers with Twitter / Facebook. (Maybe they're out there, but I don't recall having seen any.) It just seems like the world got caught up in the hype and is diverting their energies into making a lot of money - for only two websites - that are not their own.
Facebook makes it easy to have a website. (I already have a website.)
Twitter makes it easy to send messages to your friends. (I already have an iPhone.)

I can't say Face-Book has gained any sales but every time you post on your page it shows on everyone who has liked your page. So in theory its like free advertising. cause then when people look through others Walls they see a post about a new app etc. And it only takes a min to post something so why not.
