Scrolling layers and Background Layers

How many layers can you have in a background whether it is scrolling or non-scrolling?

For example, can I add 3 layers including the foreground with the 2 background layers moving in different directions or at different speeds?

    I imagine you can add as many layers as you like, as long as there's transparencies on the 'upper' layers so you can see the layers below them...

    I'm experimenting with a scrolling background now, so will let people know how I get on...
