Saving images for GS, best way?

Using photoshop, I'm having issues saving my images and having them display correctly in GS. I find my images are smaller in GS than when created. Example, and image that is 300 pixels wide is in GS under 200 in pixels wide.

I tried saving for web, but it's the same thing. I hate guessing and making the images larger. This leads to distortion. How do you save your images to preserve their look and quality?
