Apple Developer, and Social Security Number

Hi, I am working on setting up the Banking, Tax, and Contact page in iTunes Connect. It is asking for a TIN/SSN, why do they need this? Is there a way that we don't have to enter this? Also, if i do enter it, will Apple keep it safe?
Thanks,
~CTM

Im not sure why they need the TIN. But they don't take any money apart from the $99. I think it is so they can put money in your account. You can not publish apps that cost until you do everything first though. The TIN can be found on bank statements i think. :)

Well the government I think makes them send you taxes on your earnings... It's just like a job application! So they have to have your ssn/tin
