Newbie With Basic Spawning Problem

Hi, very new here with stupid questions.
I set up an actor to drop down into my scene, then I want to spawn identical actors to follow.
I set up a timer to spawn the actor - but it kind of spawns exponentially in clumps, like 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on rather than one at a time.
All help appreciated - btw I have watched every video I can find on the subject (and read the textbook).
