That bi-plane looks great! I was just thinking alil more modern when I asked, but I think I can learn the stuff that I'm looking for either way :)

    Thanks, <><

I have been looking around and is Inkscape only for PC I could not find a MAC version?

SpriteAttack - in many of your tutorials - like the last "tank" tutorial - you made a rectangle, converted it to a path and adjusted the nodes.

How do I convert an object - like a rectangle - to a path to make those adjustments?

    Thanks

@ craps - it's in the Path Menu at the top (Path/ Object to Path) or (SHIFT + CTRL + C)

The mac download is on the inkscape.org downloads page - http://inkscape.org/download/

@WTDeveloper - here is a quick on on the wood texture...

And a sample of a game I am currently working on using the very technique:

Could i request a background tutorial? I know you have touched on a couple but i always seem to struggle with the layers, alpha, blending to create the depth etc

This is GREAT, your graphic art skills are VERY good! One thing, I always try to make the "shiny" parts of an object (such as the plane you recreated from my post) Can you do a tut on that? THANKS A WHOLE LOT!!!

What I ment was the "shadow lines" and the "light ray lines" like the one on the wing and on the bottom of the plane body... Like how do you create those lines perfectly so you will not mess with the black outline?

@beefy_clyro - the background tutorial is in the pipeline.

@Persian_Dev - that should be doable... Let me see what I can come up with.

@XLWolfy - I use clipping masks for that - you create the base shape [in this case the body of the plane], give it a slighlty darker fill and duplicate it twice. Move one copy up [if your lightsource is above the object] and choose a lighter fill for the two duplicates. Select both object and use the Object/ Clip/ Set command to combine them.

It sounds a little tricky and requires some work to get used to. Play around with the depth layering [Page up/ Page down] before you combine the objects. You can get away with colouring just one if the 'object being placed' is below the 'boundry object'. I made a set of tutorials for Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw. Personally i prefer the ease of CorelDraw with Inkscape lacking some key features to make working with an essential tool like clip masks easier on the user.

Been a bit under the weather... and had to take some time off...

    @Bluechiks - will do...
@Leonard - I know but the 'wonderful' GS forum doesn't allow editing... so sorry... can't fix it... check my blog: http://2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.com/

I hate the new feature of only 6 mins editing.... you could ask a sous to do it for you........ I bookmarked your blog!! ;),
Would you be interested in designing an icon for my??

The forum has become unsuable imho.. They didn't fix the pm function - which is a major nightmare and gets worse with every new message in your list and killing off the marketplace thread was not a good idea either... So basically I am just checking every now and then rather than posting regularly...

what software is being used by Spriteattack's
  • SpriteAttackSpriteAttack Member Posts: 524
@waymanharris - I am using Inkscape for the tutorials... but basically it's the same workflow with most other vector tools [eg. Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw - I even managed to rebuild some of the stuff using a free ipad vector tool]. The commands might be called differently but if you know a little bit about the tool you should be able to rework the tutorials in your product of choice.

I was wondering if you would be able to show how to do maybe some space like art like some astronauts, a space station, or maybe just a space background. If you could I would greatly appreciate it!

    Any Tuturials for illustrator?
  • SlickZeroSlickZero Houston, TexasMember, Sous Chef Posts: 2,870
Every method used in these tutorials can be done with Illustrator, just a little difference in tool names, really. He prefers Inkscape, but I can tell you with certainty that you can do the exact same things with Illustrator.

Ok thanks one quick question then you know how he deforms the circle in his first tutorial to make the mouth and stuff how would you do that in illustrator because my path had additional options when i clicked on it.

  • LeonardDeveloperLeonardDeveloper Member Posts: 4,630
@keistof_anderson here is how you do it: once you have the new circle white is to drag one of the center points on either side and pull it slightly (dont hold shift) and you should end up with something like I have on the left.
