Over this past year, we've made strides to bring GameSalad games to more platforms. This past summer, we debuted our first non-Apple publishing target, with our HTML5-powered GameSalad Arcade. Today, GameSalad is pleased to announce its newest platform target and Professional feature: Android publishing, available today in GameSalad 0.9.85 Beta.

The Android market is far more varied and complex than the world of iOS publishing, with a multitude of Android app stores and almost innumerable devices with varied resolutions and device specifications. To accommodate this expansive market, our engineers have crafted our Android publishing system to support all the major markets, including Google, and Amazon, as well as all the latest and greatest Android devices like the Nook Color, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the soon to launch Amazon Kindle Fire.

As mentioned earlier, Android publishing is being introduced as a Professional feature. Setting up the development environment, and managing multiple forms of app packages, both signed and unsigned, as well as the multitude of app stores make for a very complex and sometimes overwhelming market. We believe Professional GameSalad members have an incredible opportunity to establish themselves on the Android marketplace, and will be a perfect group to break ground for the GameSalad community.

Also, like we said before, the Android world is very big place. To help orient yourself, we'll be providing a primer to Android App Stores and Android Devices. This will help provide you with all the need to knows in terms of testing games on comparable devices, and understanding the various package requirements that can vary from marketplace to marketplace.

That being said, Android publishing isn't the only thing new in Creator 0.9.85. We've also made modifications for improving compatibility with iOS 5. Also, we've implemented some expanded functionality in the OpenURL behavior, now allowing users to select between our in-app browser and mobile Safari. The behavior will now also automatically detect iOS App Store or email links and open the proper application (App Store or Email) rather than utilizing a browser first.

This is just the beginning and we've got a lot more coming very soon, including the second half of our performance / loading improvements, tables support, Game Center achievements, and in-app purchase.

Thank you to everyone in the GameSalad community for the incredible games you've been producing over the last two years and we can't wait to see what you bring to the Android marketplace.

    I have just downloaded it and been playing around with the publishing. There is only one option for Android, so am I right in thinking that it scales everything accordingly on each device? If so, we can't be too far away from Universal Builds which is exciting news!

    @mynameisace

    The Android specific format is for Kindle Fire / Nook Color and other 1024 x 600 devices. For standard devices with 3:2 format (480x320 or 960x640), use iPhone format and select Android from the publishing options.

    The same also goes for traditional 4:3 formats (1024 x 768), where you would use the iPad format and the select Android as the publishing target.

    Very exciting times... be great to get on the Amazon store for when the Fire starts to take off..

    I think I'll still be an apple boy first, but maybe any new games from now on could make their way to both markets.

    Cheers for the update...

    When I will arrive at home, I try it!

    But, I have some asks... On this new version, 0.9.85, bugs of 0.9.82 have been fixed?
    Because I have very performance problems with the last version, and I hope taht new version are fixed...

    Thanks.

    I can confirm it's still there. Well, it is for me at least. I'm glad this release came out now, because I've been waiting to see if this release would fix that issue, and now I know.

    I can't use the 1/3 of the screen positioning for my actor, so I will have to settle with it being in the center of the screen. I've been preparing for this to be the reality of my situation, and I'm glad the new release is here, so I can just forget it, and move past that.

    Exciting times now with Android publishing. A very good reason to go Pro if you already haven't done so. Things just keep getting better and better with GameSalad.

    That will be really useful. Given the multitude of Android devices I've always been too scared to take a closer look at them and at their relative Marketplaces.

    @All -

    Let's keep this thread on topic - questions about Android publishing are the focus here. Please relegate release questions regarding upcoming features/optimizations elsewhere. Thank you!

    I understand about upcoming features etc but isn't this the best place for current stuff?

    If no, where do you want it? Is this not a thread about a new release which isn't only Android publishing but also about some fixes? it would seem silly of me to open a new thread to ask if theres any news on the camera stuttering that you were having QA looking into it.

    @SaladStraightShooter

    So are these potential differences in how attributes or bits of GameSalad work differently between iOS and Android known, documented and available for the users to read... or is it going to be a case of trial and error, and working it out for ourselves?

    I'd like to think they'd already be known and documented... but Im guessing it'll more likely be for the community to work out?

    Great news on Android as I have something aimed at Kindle Fire/ipad, but today I discovered that B&N are only allowing US residents to publish in their Nook market place. Might have to find a 'publisher' over the water.

    First post, hehe

    Just throwing out some info one of my friends who has published on android thought I'd like to share:

    FAQ:
    http://developer.android.com/guide/publishing/publishing.html

    Registering:
    https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=androiddeveloper&passive=true&nui=1&continue=https://market.android.com/publish&followup=https://market.android.com/publish

    That's it for now, looks like it's easiest to sign in with a gmail account, pay $25 and then you're ready...who's excited for android for Xmas?

    So how would we develop for Android? Would we need to release 3 separate versions, each specifying which device the game is for (Kindle or smaller phone)? Or will a smaller version stretch (like an Iphone app can on an Ipad).
  • RUPASRUPAS Member Posts: 823
    Two important questions. To publish to any mobile device simply use the normal iphone resolution? And now the most important as it can generate the keystore to let you publish?

    sorry johnpapiomitis
