Does anyone know what file type and what program you use to make an animated character?

    Short answer - 'many'.
I use Flash (.fla) because it uses vector graphics and these easily be edited for various screen sizes/outputs.
Final file format should be .png file format to go into GS (export all frames as PNG files).

You can use inkscape and export the images to png. It's free, it's powerful and works nicely for 2D art. Check out my tutorial:

File type should be PNG if you want to import your animation into GS.

As for the program for making an animated character . . . .

    Maya
    After Effects
    Pen and paper and scanner
    Phtotoshop
    Cinema 4D
    Flash
    Lightwave 3D
    DAZ 3D
    Motion
    3D Max
    Poser

    etc etc

Don't forget Anime Studio, way easier than any 3d software and cheaper too.
