What are the graphic resolution should be used in ipad game background?

Hello.
In the previous couple of days i watched lots of tutorials and i guess i understood many thing about the rules and behaviors and i want to start experimenting by creating an ipad game.
So at what dimensions i must create my background graphics? Is it 1024x768 or more?

1024 by 768 will be the ipad screen size

and make sure your image is 72 dpi

That is fine but if making for iphone i would make all art retina (double the normal size).
