Platformer: Long background image?

I am designing a platformer, but I'm a little confused about the best way to design the background. The game scrolls to the right (or to the left) quite a distance on each level, but only a little bit up or down. What is the best way to design the background for this? I assume there are some limitations on how large the background image can be, right? What are those limitations?

    The largest each side of the image can be is 1024. You can make 1024 long actors and place them side by side.

    You can also make tiles and use the replicate behavior.
