will the LUA-FREE GS creator have broken updates?

its a common thing that GS updates break our games in one way or another or generally cause inconveniences.

is this a lua issue? i'm hoping the updates on the new upcoming native engine will free us from this and give us more stable upgrades. i cringe at every update.

Thats not a gamesalad specific thing, lots of other sdks will sometimes mess somethign up in your project when you update. The common practice is if your in the middle of a big project, you dont update till after your finished. That goes for every sdk. When engines are updated things behind the scenes change, speeds things are triggered, way behaviors are interpreted, old code becomes obsolete, ect.

I'm on the opposite end, I've never had as issue with an update. There have been publishing problems and some bugs ith the viewer, but I've never had an update break my game.

In my experience, when your gameplay is effected, it's usually down to your code structure.

But remember, the product still is beta. Things will not always be perfect

Yeah, I gotta say.. In the 2+ years I have been using GameSalad, an update has very very rarely made my game break.

There was a time aaaaaaaaaaaages ago, where there was a massive update that changed a lot of back end stuff (to speed up the long load times we used to have) that messed up some stuff a little. But nothing 10 mins of fixing up (mainly to get rid of workarounds I had put in to make things work on the older versions) couldn't solve.

Every single time there is an update, I see people on the forum saying how their game has broken because of said update. I guess we just structure our "code" differently, cos I never know what all the fuss is about ;)

What I find is if one is always deleting removing code, images and such things can get hinky. I always prototype my code in simple projects until I get it tuned and then when I have all the blocks of my code worked out I create a new project and write my code fresh. Most of the time I write my code out on a notepad and refine it before I ever write it in GS this gives me a global look at all my code and how it fits together. With this method of writing my code on paper first and refining it my code always works properly the first time.

This reminds me of the Xcode update that broke a bunch of stuff, so it's not just GS:)

I completely agree with johnmulcahy, and sparkyidr, I've rarely had a game break in GS with an update, but I think it depends on the complexity of the game, and/or how the rule sets and code structure were implemented.

I always hear other SDK's having this problem, but with GS, I've almost never had an issue!

Can't stress this enough. NEVER update GameSalad in the middle of a project, or any other software for that matter. I started a game in 0.9.90, and I'm still working with that version. I will not update until I have submitted, and have been accepted by Apple.

    Procrastination is my hindrance.

More than likely yes Updates after Lua is removed will not change some users project getting broken. The reason being Removing Lua will not magically make the end user create better code and logic for their games. Im in the middle of a client game and we have now updated GS like 3 times with no issues. but some users seem to have major issues going across one update. while yes way back when like almost 2 years ago this was a more frequent thing I have not noticed any major issues with updates for at least a year.

Good point and I know it's best practice to my update after your done with a major part of ur game. But here's catch 22:

U have errors on ur current game that the update says it will fix. So u update to fix said errors but pick up new error with the new update that fixed ur old errors. This is why I had to update several times prematurely. (That didn't sound right)

    Picture you're building a bridge.

The bridge has several different parts and you have a set of materials. One or two of the materials on your list aren't exactly what you needed, but the delivery of the new materials that do meet your criteria don't arrive until a month from now, so you have to make due because this bridge needs built.

So you build your bridge using the less-than-desirable materials, taking into account their weaknesses in your design so the bridge continues to function the way it should.

A month later, the new, stronger parts arrive, and you want to incorporate these better supplies into your design. So you quickly remove the old ones, and put in the new without any adjustments.

Except your design was built using the less-than-ideal pieces in such a way that every piece of that bridge touched those in some way - so you have to adjust your entire design to incorporate the new stronger materials. The bridge starts to fail so you're forced to properly diagnose and correct the design issues in order to move forward.

This, in a nutshell, is software development.

They is how life goes with a beta. If you don't want to do rework then wait until version1.0 to make games other than that quit crying and get to work..lol

    Uh oh. Forum gangster!

If your looking for forum wars, look elsewhere lol

    ANYWAYS,

Yea I've used many many betas software and updates never broke my projects like gs does. I think things will be bett when the lua drop arrives :)

Sure seems like some members try to bully others into not expressing their opinions/frustrations. We're all working towards the same goal.. to make great games. :bz

I have a right to my opinion just like you. I'm not stopping you from posting your opinion am I? Because I counter your opinion you get upset? All you do is complain how is than anymore productive? I never named anyone in my posts so how could I call anyone stupid? I said I was not stupid. Read my post again. So because I bring a counter argument I'm a bully but you're not trying to bully GS by your vicious and mostly unfounded complaints? I get tired of reading 100 damn topics of how people are pissed off at GS or hey I have a bug like somehow it's impossible they messed up and like 9 times out of 10 it's user error.

    Easy there Forum Gangster/Thug/Bully ;)

For the record FBS cannot do anything to your posts so claiming hes trying to silence you is simply nonsense.

I, on the other hand can shut down the thread and delete and modify etc…. So Lose the personal attacks and get back to the topic or I will shut down the thread.

That being said none of the moderators do this unless its nessacary to keep the forum running as gamesalad wants it.

    Cheers

I'm here since october 2010, and I don't remember an update that broke my game, or rules in any way.
  • 3xL3xL Member Posts: 676
I guess it depends on the complexities of the game
